Students will write a word essay on Heroes by Robert Cormier. Pre-class reading and homework Before each lesson, students are asked to read two chapters of the novel Heroes in preparation. Course Outline Pre-class reading: Introduction to the novel — Students will consider the title, the opening line and the first page of the novel Heroes.
Some important literary terminology will be introduced to encourage critical thought. Students will make predictions about the storyline based on what is set up in the opening chapter.

Session 5 Pre-class reading: Structure and Plot — In this class, students will complete a plot diagram of Heroes and use it to better understand the storyline. Students will learn how to make an in-depth analysis of how all components work together. Session 6 Pre-class reading: They will also look at a smaller setting within that community: Session 7 Pre-class reading: Language style — Robert Cormier is admired for his simple writing style.
Students will look at passages of his prose to understand its distinguishing features and learn how it is crafted. Students will explore the descriptive and religious language used by the writer. Session 8 Pre-class reading: Narration — The main character of Francis is the narrator of Heroes.
The story is therefore told through his eyes. Students will explore why Francis can be viewed as an unreliable narrator who sees himself as a failure.
Session 9 Pre-class reading: Irony — The title of the novel Heroes is ironic and irony is an important part of Robert Cormiers work. Students will explore how irony is used to imply that there is more than one interpretation of the story. Session 10 Pre-class reading: They will learn to explain why these scenes are vital for plot, characterisation and setting.
